The man arrested last week in connection with the fatal stabbing of a family member was not charged with that man's death. He does, however, face other charges.
The Douglas County Attorney's Office declined to file homicide charges against Jasaun Thompson, 30, in the death of his brother-in-law Reno Busby, 24.
Thompson, who lives near 23rd Street and Grand Avenue, was arrested Thursday after an altercation involving family members at 2118 Pinkney St.
When police arrived they found Busby with stab wounds. He later died and Thompson was arrested.
On Monday, Thompson, who has a prior drug conviction, was charged with being a felon in possession of a deadly weapon and ordered held on $25,000 bail. If convicted, Thompson could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.
Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said Thompson was acting in self-defense when he stabbed Busby.
Busby was married to Thompson's sister, Jache.
Prosecutor Rob MacTaggart said that Reno and Jache Busby were having an argument in the upstairs of their home. At some point Reno Busby and Thompson went downstairs and started fighting, and Busby pulled Thompson's coat over Thompson's head.
MacTaggart said Thompson pulled out a small knife and swung it wildly until Busby released him. Thompson has said he was afraid for his life and thought Busby had a gun, based on gestures Busby had been making.
MacTaggart said Jache Busby told officers about previous domestic violence.
Jache Busby and other members of Thompson's family were at court Monday and called the incident a tragedy for both men's families.
“He's a good person,” Jacara Alston said of her brother, Thompson. “Our condolences go out to the Busby family.”
